Harbour Island is located 96 km from Nassau's international airport and, as a result, receives fewer visitors than New Providence and has a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere. It is the second largest island in the Bahamas and has an abundance of lush green vegetation that reaches down to the water's edge. Harbour Island is famed for its pretty beaches with their delicate pink sands.
Dunmore Town, the only town on the island, was the former capital of the Bahamas. It was home to several important shipyards at the end of the 19th century and the beautiful villas that line its streets are a remnant of this prosperous past.
