Kapawi is located near the Ecuadorian and Peruvian border, in the Southern Ecuadorian Amazon Basin on the Pastaza River, a major tributory of the Amazon. Kapawi is one of the most pristine and isolated points in the Amazon Basin, accessed only by air. The closest town is within ten days walking distance.
The ecolodge was built in partnership with Canodros tour company and the Actuar Indians (who remained isolated until the 1970's) with the aim to return it to the native community in 2011. The goal is to work with the Achuar to provide a successful alternative to the traditional destruction created by enterprises in the Amazon Rain Forest.
The lodge was built on the edge of the Kapawi Lagoon and created in accordance with the Achuar concept of architecture without nails, the houses were built on stilts in order to minimize the impact caused to the surrounding vegetation.
The lodge has 20 double rooms with private bathrooms, sun heated showers and electricity provided by solar panel systems, every room has a wide terrace that allows you to observe daily visitors including butterflys and birds some of which have not been identified by science. Their dining room is located at the central part of the complex with outstanding service it offers a beautiful verandah where some of the meals are served, which are a tasty combination of Ecuadorian and international dishes using some products from the rainforest.

It is advised that if bringing children they should be of an age where they can walk.
Additional facilities include library and a small boutique selling locally made handicrafts. Please see the hotels' website for information as to what to pack to visit the lodge, there is a weight restriction for the luggage of 30kg. There is no articficial light in use at Kapawi due the adverse effect it could have on the nocturnal animals so bring a torch!
The Lodge provides multiple activities that are characterized by its flexibility. They allow you to design, with your guide and group, the most suitable activity to meet your interests and physical condition. Nevertheless, most itineraries will include visits to the Achuar communities, hikes in the rain forest, canoeing and bird watching.
According to your physical condition and not your age, they offer three alternatives:
Easy path:
Short hikes in the rainforest (up to 3 hours) on the well-defined trails, visits to the Achuar communities and trips in canoes.
Moderate path:
Medium distance hikes in the rain forest (up to 5 hours) and sometimes crossing flooded areas, along with visits to the Achuar communities and trips in canoes.
Difficult path:
Demanding hikes that take many hours or days in poorly defined and often flooded trails. Porters will carry food and supplies. Trips on inflatable rafts down inaccessible rivers are offered. In some instances, exploration journeys to virgin areas are conducted.

All accommodation, meals, excursions and activities throughout the program by motorised canoes, kayaks, trials and Achuar community visits. Program lectures by noted naturalists and leadership provided by experienced expedition staff, pre-departure informative material and Tropical Forest Handbook, Transportation in the lodge and baggage handling between the airport and the lodge.
Single Exclusive, passengers who require single accomodation.
Single Share, applies to passengers that are travelling alone but are willing to share the cabin with another passenger, from the same group or other reservation, two queen beds and sharing bathroom.
Double, applies to passengers who are travelling with a friend and want to share the cabin with that person, two queen beds and sharing bathroom.
Triple, applies to passengers that are travelling with friends and wants to share the cabins with these people or with people of the same group or other reservation, three beds sharing bathroom. It is possible that you share the balcony with the guest in the cabin next door. Accomodation will be determined at the lodge upon cabins availability.
Children under 12 years of age and under pay half price when accompanied by an adult in the same cabin, discount applied on double occupancy rate only. Service charge is per person. Children under 3 years of age pay half price for the transportation rate Quito-Kapawi-Quito.
