Las más de 17.000 islas que forman el archipiélago de Indonesia se extienden a lo largo de una franja ecuatoriana de más de 5.000 kilómetros. La variedad que caracteriza el país es impresionante, fruto de los 300 grupos étnicos y las 250 lenguas que en él conviven. Java, Papua, Bali, Sumatra, Lombok o Sulawesi son sólo las más conocidas de estas islas, caracterizadas por sus bellas playas y por su exótica herencia cultural.
Destaca en el país la riqueza de la fauna y la flora, que puede observarse por ejemplo en los parques naturales de Kerinci Seblat, Bukit Barisan Seelatan, Lorente, Gunung Leuser, Comodo o Ujung Kulon.
En los parques pueden verse especies endémicas como el ave del paraíso, el enorme dragón de Comodo o la flor Rafflesia Arnoldii, que puede llegar a medir hasta un metro de diámetro. Pero la joya de la fauna indonesia es el orangután, que sólo vive el las selvas de Sumatera y Kalimantan.
