Remotos castillos presidiendo silenciosos lagos, musgosas tierras bajas que acaban en acantilados, lejanas islas, abandonadas casas de campo, gaitas, brujas y whisky. Aunque los escoceses sólo muestran menosprecio por éstas románticas imágenes, el hecho es que su país es una tierra de inesperados paisajes y peculiares tradiciones.
Dos ciudades destacan en Escocia. La capital, Edimburgo, es una bonita ciudad con más de 45000 edificios catalogados: muchas de sus casas georgianas son ahora pequeños hoteles de lujo. Famosa por el antiguo Castillo de Edimburgo y por el Festival Anual, es comprensible que atraiga a más de 1 millón de visitantes al año.
Glasgow puede considerarse lo opuesto a Edimburgo. Importante centro de ingeniería y armadores durante la Revolución Industrial nunca se ha considerado una ciudad bonita. Aunque recientes movimientos para renovar su imagen han conseguido una energía cultural vanguardista más viva en muchos sentidos que su respetable gemela.
Aunque lo mejor de Escocia no se encuentra en sus ciudades sino en las orillas de los lagos del interior, en los acantilados de su espectacular costa o andando a través de imponentes montañas. Las posibilidades de estos lugares han sido constatadas por numerosos hoteles con encanto, una tranquila opción en la accidentada belleza de Escocia.
