Comment s'y rendre:
The principal gateway to St. Barts (SBH) is through Juliana Airport in nearby Dutch St Maarten, where flights arrive daily from both the USA and Europe.
Commercial flights:
USAIR, Delta, Continental, American Airlines, and United Airlines have direct flight to St Maarten Juliana (SXM) from the USA: Philadelphia, PA; Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, GA; Miami, FL; San Juan, PR; New York and Newark.
Air France, Corsair , Alitalia, and KLM have regular flights to St Maarten and Guadeloupe from Europe.
From St Maarten, Winair, Air Caraïbes, and St Barth Commuter, make the ten minute shuttle flights to St Barts (SBH).
From Guadeloupe, Air Caraïbes offers a few direct flights to St Barts (45 minutes) and others via St Marteen departing at times meant to accommodate the arrival of the bigger planes from Europe.
Air Caraïbes also has sereral flights a week between San Juan and St Barts via St Marteen.
Locally based charter flights, which can ease transfer, especially from San Juan and Antigua, are also available.
Charter flights: Sometimes it's more convenient to charter a plane than to use the scheduled airlines to come and go from St. Barts. It's always more fun.
Wimco - organizes charter flights from San Juan.
Winair - More than 40 years serving the eastern Caribbean.
Private aircraft: The landing runway is 2170 feet long, and the approach, from either direction, is often plagued by varying degrees of turbulence. As a result, the French aviation authorities require that a special permit be issued to any pilot who intends to land in St. Barts.
Those planning to land in St Barts will have to land in Grand Case, French St Martin, first, in order to get their qualification. St Barts Control tower will tell you how to contact a French instructor for certification. It takes a couple of hours, and includes touch-and-go in both directions. Don't do it on a windy day with a hangover.
The landing fee varies from 8.5 Euros to 12.5 Euros, and parking fee is 5.5 Euros/ night.
There are no mechanic nor fuel on the field. Best nearby place for that is at Grand Case Airport in St. Martin. No fuel is available during their long lunch hour. When you arrive or depart, you are required to deposit a General Declaration form with the immigration officer at the door and file a flight plan. If you do not own your own airplane and want the feeling of arriving in a private aircraft, locally based charter flights are available.
Ferries: If you're nervous about landing at St. Barths' airport, the ferry round trip will cost you from 50 Euros to 75 Euros:
- Great Bay Express is a brand new ferry operation established by Sir Bobby Velasquez, a famous figure in the islands yachting industry and owner of "Bobby's Marina ".
- MV Voyager departs from St. Martin at 9:00 AM and at 6:45 PM : daily except Wednesday and Sunday from the waterfront in Marigot, to arrive in Gustavia around 75 minutes later. Wednesday and Sunday from Oyster Pond, to arrive in Gustavia around 45 minutes later.
There is also a hight speed ferry named The Edge that comes to Gustavia once a day from Tuesday till Saturday. It leaves from Pelican Marina in Dutch St. Maarten at 9 AM. The passage lasts around 45 minutes. And you can also charter a high-speed boat to come and pick you up in St Maarten. Contact Marine Service or Master Ski Pilou, who offers a 24/7 St. Maarten water taxi service.
Private Yachts: A full range of facilities are available for visiting pleasure boats:
Sixty berths are available dockside for yachts no longer than 200ft., maximum draft 15ft.
Anchorage, in the inner harbor, for fourteen yachts no longer than 80ft., maximum draft 13ft.
