Provence seems to bring out the best in poets and painters; it inspired the vivid images of Van Gogh and Cézanne and the romantic overtures of the Troubadours. With its patchwork fields of lavender, poppy and sunflower; its market towns and plane-shaded squares; its wetlands and coastlines and the snow-capped peaks behind, Provence for many is more a dreamscape than a landscape.

Avignon is a beautiful city on the banks of the Rhone famed for the medieval Gothic architecture of the Palais des Papes and its summer arts festival. |
Arles has numerous important Roman ruins that are World Heritage Sites; it is also within easy reach of the Camargue nature reserve. Aix-en-Provence is an ancient Roman spa town known as the 'city of a thousand fountains', with its hot healing waters.
In the centre, the beautiful Haut Var region boasts pretty hilltop villages in national parks with breathtaking views across valleys. It is perhaps on the French Riviera, where the glamour of Cannes and Nice blends with the perfumes of Grasse and the picturesque Saint-Paul-de-Vence, that some of the most inspiring scenes in Provence can be found, and some of the prettiest boutique hotels. |
