Meson Panza Verde was established in 1986 as one of the first European style bed and breakfast in Antigua, Guatemala. Ideally located at the quiet end of famous Fifth Avenue, it is a pleasant four block walk from Antigua's main Plaza and Cathedral down a cobble stone street past wonderful ruins and several delightful shops.
People often ask about the name, Panza Verde is what generations of Antigüeños have called themselves. No one is quite certain of the full story, but it is said that the people who remained living here after the Capital was moved to Guatemala City were so poor that they had to subsist on avocados. Being a Panza Verde is mentioned with great pride.
The hotel has only twelve bedrooms, there is an inviting central garden and fountain surrounded by a veranda that is "quintessential" Antigua. Many consider Meson Panza Verde to be the preferred destination for their stay in beautiful Spanish Colonial Antigua, the land of eternal spring.
From the tiled veranda that surrounds the center garden, the scent of roses, jasmine and lush green mountains mingle with the murmur of falling water from the lovely garden fountain, with spectacular 360º views of Antigua, many ruins and three volcanoes.
Their restaurant is considered one of the finest in the country. Its reputation for "international cuisine with a twist" has made it a favorite with Guatemalans and international travellers alike. Their chef was trained in France and Switzerland and brings refinement to classic Guatemalan dishes. Take your choice of dining alfresco on the veranda surrounding the garden and fountain, or amid fine wines, original paintings and objects d'art inside their elegant restaurant with vaulted cathedral ceilings. They have one of the most extensive wine lists in Guatemala, and also take pride in having one of the largest selections of single malt scotch, run and tequila. There is Cafe Terraza on the second floor, and a new Panza Verde Cueva where on Thursday and Friday nights they have live music, featuring Latin, Jazz or Classical piano.
Exhibits by local and international artists are presented periodically in the beamed-ceiling gallery. Their expansive rooftop terrace makes an ideal setting for a large cocktail party or reception. Surrounded by views of Antigua's tiled rooftops, domed cupolas and towering volcanoes, the space is stunning during the day or at sunset. Combined with Galeria Panza Verde, it can also provide a perfect space for small conferences and other special events. |
