The southern coast of Portugal, the Algarve region, has become a first class tourist destination thanks to its excellent climate, beautiful coastline, and picturesque quiet little inland towns. Golf is also a big attraction here and there are many golf courses to choose from.
The beaches, with their fine white sand are a main attraction and there is something for everyone: from extensive sandy beaches to hidden little coves surrounded by captivating rock formations. All along the entire coastline, contrast is the norm; likewise the towns also reflect stark contrasts. They range from bustling touristic centers to small fishing towns nearly untouched by time.
Some of the fascinating land formations include curious islands of sand, found all along the coast, between the town of Faro and the Spanish coast. While on the nearby beaches of Lagos and Albufeira, you can discover the cliffs and intriguing caves and the strange arcs between the rocks formed by the constant crashing of the ocean. Inland, less visited, we find picturesque little towns and the Roman ruins of Estói and Serra de Monchique, covered in thick chestnut and cork forests.
