The famous vacation spot known as the Costa Brava (Brave Coast), which extends from Blanes, some 65 kilometers north of Barcelona, up to the French border, is one of the most beautiful coastlines of the Mediterranean. Fifty years ago, all the towns along the Costa Brava were just small fishing villages that only got a few summer holiday visitors interested in sailing, seafood, sun and fun. Now, because of the wonderful climate, intimate beaches and enticing tapas that the area is renowned for, some have become exciting tourist towns with a plethora of hotels, discos, stores, and restaurants, while others are still sleepy little villages with all their old-time charm and maritime appeal.
The northern part of the Costa Brava is rugged, dry, and rocky with low vegetation of bushes and undergrowth when the rocks are not completely bare. The steep rocky cliffs of the cape, Cap de Creus, with its windblown lava deposits, make the landscape seem magical and surreal. Further south, the landscape softens s bit. The rocks take on a reddish hue and the land is dotted with the green of pine forests that nearly reach the sea. A few kilometers inland we find the quiet relaxed towns of Monells and Fonolleres, with some beautiful boutique hotels.
