Zurich once had a somewhat staid reputation as a centre of old wealth and power where efficiency and cleanliness deprived the city of any cultural soul. The city sits on the north-western end of Lake Zurich, a lake so clean its waters are considered potable. The old town surrounds the point where the lake becomes the River Limmat and among its pretty cobbled lanes and medieval architecture are numerous boutiques, cafes and small luxury hotels.

Two medieval churches are also noteworthy: Grossmünster, built around 820, played a significant role in the Protestant Reformation; and the elegant Fraumünster, built around 874, which features stunning stained glass windows by the artist Marc Chagall.
