Bangkok is not necessarily a beautiful city -there are modern monstrosities built alongside incredible ancient temples- but it is certainly fascinating, thriving and fun. Located between the two very different characters of northern and southern Thailand, Bangkok exemplifies the country's noble attempts to both preserve its heritage and advance its present.

Ratanakosin is the royal island on the banks of Chao Phraya River. It is the site of the Grand Palace and the holiest temple in Thailand, Wat Phra Kaeo, housing the revered Emerald Buddha. Across the river is the old but less ostentatious canal district of Thonburi, best explored by longtail boat, particularly its picturesque floating market.

The area around Siam Square and Downtown Bangkok is the opposite extreme: a modern metropolis with vast shopping centres, small luxury hotels and chic international restaurants. Here Jim Thompson's House is a museum to Thai architecture and interior design. While nearby Chinatown offers the adventurous a lively maze of bazaars, boutique hotels, dressmakers and jewellery shops.
