 Amberley Castle Hotel, Amberley

Few English castles enjoy so idyllic a setting as 900 year-old Amberley Castle in Sussex, nor have many played so colourful a role in the rich pageant of England's history. Cradled by the chalk downs, lapped by water meadows, with the picturesque village of Amberley - known as the 'Pearl of Sussex' - lying in the shadow of its curtain stone walls.

Since 1988, the Cummings family have made Amberley Castle their home, and with flair and imagination have transformed this magnificent historical treasure into a luxurious, award-winning Country Castle Hotel and Restaurant with an international reputation. They have preserved the priceless air of peace and tranquillity which envelopes Amberley Castle whilst restoring the lands and buildings to their former glory.

One of the latest projects has been the conversion of two 17th Century stone buildings within the dry moat to form The Bishopric; five suites all with private lounges and en suite Jacuzzi bathrooms. Each has been named after the most influential Bishops, who have resided at Amberley in the past.

Experience the luxurious ambience and excellent service that makes Amberley the ideal venue for exclusive meetings of senior management and directors of the board, the perfect choice for think-tanks or seminars. Amberley Castle has played host to royalty, politicians and VIP's throughout its illustrious history and is available on an exclusive use basis for those particularly sensitive occasions.

The superb culinary skills of the head chef and his team have achieved recognition and accolades for the cuisine served at Amberley Castle. An eclectic style reflects both the Castle's exciting history and contemporary influences. The best, locally produced seasonal ingredients are used to compliment imaginative dishes and gastronomic delights.

Amberley Castle is licensed for civil marriages, or for a religious service - the beautiful church of St Michael's in Amberley village is just a short stroll away. All rooms are available for exclusive use and private functions.

One of the exciting commemorative projects for the Castle's 900th anniversary in 2003, was the creation of a new professional standard 18-hole putting course within its extensive grounds. The course is now open for Castle residents offering guests the opportunity not only to sharpen up their green's play, but a tranquil and imaginative new garden in which to stroll.

With an impressive water cascade and two new lakes, it is a quiet haven in which to watch the wildlife or sit and relax in one of three gazebos, each boasting superb views to the South Downs or across the course to the Castle.

A New All-Weather Hard Tennis Court has recently been installed in the grounds.

"Amberley Ambles" is the first in a series of local maps for its guests, designed to slip easily into the pocket, the maps outline a number of strolls around the village and local area. Appropriately the first map takes visitors on foot from the Castle into the picturesque village of Amberley. Other maps will feature walks around the Amberley Wildbrooks and to Houghton along the downs.
