This historic inn was built in 1760 as a private residence for Colonel Francis Malbone who made his fortune as a shipping merchant at a time when Newport Harbor was one of the busiest Harbors in the New World.
At the start of the Revolutionary War, the British occupied Newport and seized the Malbone Estate. The mansion was used to store looted gold and treasures, leading to its nickname, "the Treasure House." At the end of the war, the mansion was returned to the Malbone family who retained ownership until the early 1830's.
The Francis Malbone House has been lovingly maintained throughout the years, as evidenced by the painstaking restoration undertaken during the early 1970's. The three story brick Georgian mansion retains its architectural heritage and original colonial character to this day.
The floor plan is typical for the era and in 1989, the present owners opened the estate as an Historic Inn, offering nine guest rooms. In 1996, they embarked on building a sensitively designed addition, which has allowed the inn to expand to twenty bedrooms. All are impeccably furnished with beautiful antiques and period reproductions. You will notice the fine attention to detail throughout, as well as the personalized service you will receive from your innkeepers. Queen Anne style furnishings are featured in each bedroom along with beautiful oriental rugs and custom window coverings, rare paintings and prints. 12 bedrooms feature relaxing Jacuzzis and 15 of them (and all suites) offer working fireplaces.
Their 4 fireplaced Guest Parlors offer warm, comfortable sitting arrangements for your enjoyment and relaxation. These rooms, along with a manicured courtyard, are the perfect setting to enjoy complimentary afternoon tea and delicious homemade snacks. Their dining room features a 15-foot dome ceiling, beautiful chandelier and large fireplace.
Known as America's "First Resort", the city-by-the-sea offers something for everyone. From beautiful beaches to scenic harbor cruises. Guided tours through Guilded Age "summer cottages" to self-guided tours through the streets of historic, colonial Newport. Newport also offers some of the best dining New England has to offer. From casual New England seaport taverns to 5-Star French and Continental restaurants. Nearly all attractions, shopping and restaurants are a short walk from the House. Your knowledgeable innkeepers are always willing and able to assist when planning activities or if you are in need of restaurant suggestions and reservations.
