In der nordwestlichen Ecke Afrikas gelegen, von Spanien durch den Meerenge von Gibraltar getrennt, von Arabern erobert, von Europäern kolonisiert, zum Großteil von Berbern bevölkert, ist Marokko ein Gemisch von Einflüssen, die das Gefühl einer Reise durch die Geschichte vermitteln.
Die nördliche Stadt Tanger verkörpert Marokkos kulturellen Übergang dank des Handels von und über das Mittelmeer. Südwestlich hiervon liegt Fez, die ehemalige Hauptstadt Marokkos. Durch seine mittelalterliche Medina zu laufen, ist wie ein Schritt zurück in die Geschichte: Die gewunden Strassen sind so eng, das die übliche Art des Transportes mit Eseln durchgeführt wird.
Die Küstenstädte Rabat, Casablanca und El Jadida vermitteln gleich ein europäisches Gefühl. Erstere ist die elegante administrative Hauptstadt; die Zweite, ein blühendes Handelszentrum; die Dritte, die Hafenstadt von Marrakesch, deren befestigte portugiesische Stadt nun Weltkulturerbe ist. Essaouira weiter unten an der Küste ist ein ruhiger und malerischer Ort mit einigen schönen Boutique-Hotels.
Marrakesch ist das pulsierende Herz Marokkos: Die Souks und Strassen in seiner Medina vermitteln Ansichten, Geräusche und Gerüche. Weiter im Süden warten die beeindruckende Landschaft des Atlasgebirges und die Sahara darauf, erkundet werden.
