The almost 2,000 year-old Diocletian's Palace, where the famous Roman emperor was born, is the emblem of Split's amazing cultural and historical legacy. Considered the best preserved Roman palace that exists, the surrounding old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Split is the second largest city in Croatia, after the capital, Zagreb. A vital locality whose center seems to be stopped in time. The Pjaca square is beautiful with the old Renaissance town hall of Venetian influence and marble pavement slabs. The Prokurative squares and the popular fruit market are also interesting.

The St. Duje Cathedral with Roman elements is a must. Go up to the top of the iconic six-story bell tower, with Romanesque lobed arched windows. Marjan hill offers, from another side, more panoramic views over the city and the Croatian islands of the Adriatic Sea. Located on the east slope, the old Jewish cemetery is worth entering. The 13th century Church of San Nicolás and the Renaissance Church of San Jerónimo are there.
The Archaeological Museum of Split houses an imposing collection of pieces that explain its history. While charming hotels located in the old town help you live the history. |
