This is one of the most unknown regions of France. Inside the country, it shines like a gem to be discovered. Eminently rural, it still treasures a unique architectural heritage after flourishing during the Middle Ages with a leading role in the route that the pilgrims take to Santiago de Compostela. Notable castles like Boussac or Pompadour, and abbeys like that of Épeau, dot a landscape that has preserved its authenticity.
Limonges, the most populous city, is famous for its exquisite porcelain that emerged in the 18th century. From here also come the legendary tapestries of Aubusson, from the 1600's, currently classified as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

To the northwest of the French Massif Central, the landscapes alternate between wet plateau with valleys and swampy areas between hills, the so-called Limousin Mountains. For hiking enthusiasts, the Natural Park of Perigord-Limousin with the Monnerie reservoir, and the Millevaches Park, with the Gioux Nature Reserve and the reservoir of Coudet, are unforgettable scenes. Its centuries-old chestnut forests have turned chestnuts into the main seasoning ingredient of local cuisine.
And here, hidden in plain sight, fabulous castles converted into luxury hotels dazzle anyone who ventures to discover the region. |
