Here in the northwest of France, the historic ensemble of castles that rise on the banks of the Loire river, declared a World Heritage Site, have made this place famous. Along the valley, between the cities of Angers and Orleans, more than fifty majestic, mainly Renaissance buildings dazzle the eyes.
Many are can be visited. One you can't miss is the Castle of Chambord, the largest of all with more than 400 rooms and a large interior staircase attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. The 16th century Chenonceau is known as the castle of the ladies, with a great gallery to the river Cher. Cheverny features a sumptuous interior design and its own forest.

The best preserved castle with the least intervention is that of Langeais. The Castle of Sully-sur-Loire, dating back to the late 14th century, is an authentic defensive fortress surrounded by water.
Chaumont, which belonged to Catherine de 'Medici, offers a splendid view over the Loire Valley.
In addition, there are other must-sees in the valley. Places like Orleans, with a medieval center of film and the legendary house of Joan of Arc. Blois is a city that brings together the history of the castles of the Loire. The delightful village of Montresor has a castle, of course. Stay in some that are now hotels, all with assured charm. |
