One of the most fascinating of the Cylades Islands is Santorini. Its half-moon shape embraces the sea as the crater rim of a submerged volcano and it's in fact known as Caldera.
Most of our small luxury hotels in Santorini are in Fira (Tira or Thira), the capital, or in Firostefani, Imerovigli, or Oia, towns climbing up the steep cliffs that form the crater. All feature exceptional views as they are stepped terraces that clamber up the steep slopes. Another option, generally more economical, is staying in the beach boutique hotels of Vlychada or Perivolos or the boutique hotels in the small villages further inland, such as Pirgos. |
Getting There: Santorini features an active international airport but if you want to arrive by sea, we recommend the fast ferries of Hellenic Seaways, which take about 3 hours from Athens. Don't miss: -Take a tour around the island in one of the boats that launches from the old port, or at least visit the islands that complete the circle of the caldera. There are areas where the still active volcano produces yellow water and hot springs. -Enjoy the surprising sensation of a volcanic beach with its black or red sand. -The sunset against the horizon of the village of Oia, is the most western point of the island. |
