Lecce is a city in southern Italy, located in the region of Apulia (Puglia in Italian), specifically on the Salento Peninsula, which forms the “heel” of the Italian boot. Known as the “Florence of the South,” Lecce stands out for its dazzling Baroque architecture, a style known as Lecce Baroque, which developed between the 17th and 18th centuries by making use of the local soft, golden stone. A walk through its streets reveals richly decorated façades, wrought-iron balconies, majestic churches, and harmonious squares. A landmark site is the Basilica of Santa Croce, with its façade filled with sculptures of angels, fantastic animals, and vegetal motifs. Very nearby is the Piazza del Duomo, one of the most beautiful enclosed squares in Italy, where the Lecce Cathedral (Duomo), the bell tower, the archbishop’s palace, and the seminary |
stand. The Roman amphitheater, partially excavated in Piazza Sant’Oronzo, is also well worth a visit. Lecce is also an important cultural center, offering theaters, museums, music festivals, and craft fairs. In addition, its local cuisine, rich in homemade pasta such as orecchiette, dishes featuring countryside vegetables, and Salento olive oil, is another of its great attractions. The surroundings of Lecce are equally remarkable, with towns such as Otranto, Gallipoli, and Santa Maria di Leuca, as well as inland villages like Galatina, famous for its Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria and its medieval frescoes, or Nardò, with its elegant Baroque architecture. Many of these towns are surrounded by centuries-old olive groves, almond orchards, and vineyards that produce intense red wines such as Negroamaro and Primitivo. |
