In the south of Italy, the historical center of Matera is fascinating due to its dramatic contrasts. Built on the deep Gravina ravine, here you find small luxury hotels in both in old palaces and in the caves carved in the rock of the Sassi district.
Originally a prehistoric troglodyte settlement, the Sassi (stones in Italian) became the humble habitat of landless peasants and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its steep terrain, Matera is an exciting landscape that begs you to cross it through stairs and alleyways that go up and down. |
The 13th century Cathedral is located at the highest point of the city. The Convent and Church of San Agustín crowns a cliff with magnificent panoramic views. On the other side of the Gravina stream, discover the Park of Murgia Materana and the group of more than 160 small cave churches. Among them, Santa Lucia alle Malve with frescos from the 13th century or Santa Bárbara.
Because of its scenic physical geography and vernacular architecture, Matera has starred in famous films such as The Gospel according to Matthew by Pier Paolo Pasolini and The Passion of Christ by Mel Gibson. |
