Located in northern Spain, the most populous city in the Basque Country is an example of successful urban transformation. With the change from the twentieth to the twenty-first century, it was converted from an industrial port city into a capital of culture and art. The spectacular building of the Guggenheim Museum covered with curved titanium plates, designed by the Californian architect Frank Gehry, was inaugurated in 1997 as a symbol of the new stage. It is next to the Ria de Bilbao, where one can go by boat to the Bay of Abra.

Also next to the estuary, next to the San Antón bridge, is the Mercado La Ribera. The origin of its activity goes back to the fourteenth century, although the current building dates back to 1929.

It is considered to be one of the most complete municipal supply markets in the world, and the largest covered market in all of Europe. It lives up to the fame of the tasty Basque cuisine, to be enjoyed both in the haute cuisine restaurants of the city (there are a dozen Michelin star places), as well as in the informal pinchos bars.

The historic center of Bilbao also deserves attention: the Plaza Nueva with a porticoed perimeter, built in the 19th century, is a neoclassical jewel. Occupying an entire block of the Ensanche of the Villa de Bilbao, the Alhóndiga, a former centenary wine store, is today a dazzling cultural center.
