Strategically located in the center of Castilla-La Mancha, Guadalajara is a city with a rich fusion of history, art, and nature. One of the most representative emblems of its past is the Torreón de Alvar Fáñez, a pentagonal structure that remains as a testament to the ancient Caliphate wall that protected the city during Muslim rule. A stroll through Guadalajara reveals monuments of great artistic value, such as the 15th-century Palacio del Infantado, the former residence of the influential Mendoza family. From there, Calle Mayor leads to the urban heart, the Plaza Mayor, a space surrounded by historic buildings that reflect the local architectural essence. Nearby, on Teniente Figueroa Street, are the Church of Santiago and the Convent of La Piedad, while the Palacio de la Cotilla, also known as the Palace of the Marquises of Villamejor, offers a prime example of Baroque luxury. The Church |
of San Nicolás el Real, located in the Plaza del Jardinillo, marks the end of a tour of the historic center. Guadalajara's gastronomy, deeply rooted in the land and tradition, not only delights with flavors such as cocido guadalajareño, roast lamb, or queixal, but is also intertwined with the popular celebrations that mark the rhythm of the city throughout the year. During these festivities, such as the solemn Holy Week, the lively August Fair, the endearing Fiesta de la Alcarria, or the devotional Virgen de la Antigua, local flavors and traditional sweets such as melindres and rosquillos take center stage. A few kilometers from Guadalajara, the Alto Tajo Natural Park offers an ideal space for hiking among canyons and rivers, while the Buendía Reservoir offers water sports in a serene setting, in addition to the nearby Hayedo de Tejera Negra. |
