Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is built on a bend in the Aare River, giving it unparalleled natural beauty. Founded in the 12th century, the city has managed to preserve its medieval architecture, especially in its old town, known as the Altstadt. Among the city's most notable landmarks are the neo-Renaissance Bundeshaus (federal palace) and the Französische Kirche (French church). Other attractions include its famous medieval fountains, built in the 16th century, and its Zytgloggeturm, which was built in 1191 and has had various uses throughout history, including as a women's prison. Bern Cathedral, known as the Berner Münster, is the largest church in Switzerland and an impressive example of Gothic architecture. With its tower, which reaches 100 metres in height, it is the highest in Switzerland and offers a spectacular panoramic view of the old town, the Aare River and the snow-capped peaks of the Bernese Oberland. Another place of great interest is the Matte district, at the foot of the cathedral, which has |
preserved its authenticity and is the oldest in the city. The Rose Garden, with a stunning view of the old town, is perfect for strolling among a wide variety of flowers, and the Bear Park is another attraction that offers the opportunity to see bears in a natural setting. The Water Tower, which is part of the city's old defensive system, is another iconic site for history lovers. In terms of gastronomy, Bern offers a variety of dishes that reflect its cultural diversity, with German, Italian and French influences: cheese fondue, rösti (a potato omelette) and raclette. Also of note is the Berner Platte, a hearty country dish featuring a mix of cured and smoked meats. Bern is known for its sweet treats, such as the Nusstorte (walnut cake) and its famous chocolate. Bern also comes alive during its festivals. The Spring Festival marks the start of the summer season with music, markets and activities for the whole family. The Bern Film Festival is another major event that attracts filmmakers and audiences from around the world. |
