Seat of royal dynasties and imperial powers, Vienna was the political and cultural heart of Europe for centuries. Strategically placed at the centre of the continent, on the banks of the great Danube River, Vienna's grand past is today preserved as a World Heritage Site. Among the stately buildings is the imposing Hofburg Imperial Palace, winter residence of the Habsburg dynasty and today seat of the Austrian Federal President. Its former stables have now been converted and integrated into the Museumsquartier: one of the largest cultural districts in the world with art museums, exhibition spaces, dance studios, film festivals and other artistic events. |
Once the home of Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss, Vienna has an outstanding musical past and present with numerous opera houses, including the Staatsoper and Volksoper, as well as the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Vienna Boys' Choir. Vienna frequently ranks first or second as the city with the highest standard of living and the civilized atmosphere pervades the cafes and delicatessens, the wine bars and restaurants. Many of the small luxury hotels in Vienna are found in the historic centre, close to Stephansplatz with its Gothic Stephansdom cathedral, contemporary Haas-Haus and exclusive boutique shopping. |
