It is in this French region where champagne was invented. As the most glamorous sparkling drink in the world, its worldwide fame has transcended to the point that fourteen wineries, different cultivated hillsides and other places in the region have been given the category of "Cultural Landscape" by the UNESCO World Heritage Organization. It is in the abbey of Hautvillerswhere the legend of champagne was born in the 17th century when the Benedictine monk Dom Pérignon discovered the effervescence of wine.

In Reims, the capital, a highlight is the indomitable spirit of the Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame, seat of coronation of many kings of France. The stained glass windows are the work of the painter Chagall, contributed in the twentieth century.
