Surely the most famous place in this region in northern France is Mont Saint Michel. Its spectacular abbey and walled medieval enclosure becomes an island in a few hours when it is surrounded by water due to the Atlantic tides. But there is much more. Behold the wild beauty, the Alabaster coast offers spectacular white stone cliffs, like those of Étretat. In more than one hundred kilometers of coastline, one of the crowning jewels is the village Veules-les-Roses: a holiday destination since the end of the 19th century which was frequented by the writer Victor Hugo.
The capital of Normandy, Rouen, is another unique place. Discover its old town with facades of houses made of wood.

Along the river Seine, the old medieval Benedictine abbeys like Jumièges and Saint-Georges are captivating. This is a land of artists. The beauty of Honfleur seduced the Impressionist painters. Visit the wonderful old port on the Seine estuary, the 15th century wooden church of Santa Catarina built entirely of wood, and the historic center. The impressionist route passes through Monet's house in Giverny, the cathedral of Rouen that the painter immortalized and the Malraux museum in Le Havre. The history of the twentieth century has another highlight on the beaches of the Normandy landings, country homes and spectacular mansions that house charming hotels. |
