Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands and southern-most island in Europe. It boasts impressive geographical diversity, a fascinating history and picturesque villages. But perhaps the most appealing thing about this popular island is its people, renowned for their hospitality and their love of music, art and food.
Crete has over 1000-kilometres of coastline from golden beaches to hidden coves; it has fertile plains, deep gorges and dramatic mountains, plus over 3000 caves, many associated with Greek mythology, particularly the birth of Zeus. The numerous archaeological remains on Crete include those of the Bronze Age Minoan Civilization with settlements at Knossos |
and Phaistos, among others.
The capital of Crete is Heraklion, a busy city with bustling markets, excellent museums, hip cafes and smart shops. Rethymno is an idyllic town with pretty streets, a historic fortress, long sandy beaches and some of the best boutique hotels in Crete. Other small luxury hotels can be found near Chania, the beautiful Venetian harbour town towards the western end of the island.
A visit to Crete would not be complete without sampling some of the local fare: full of the flavours of indigenous herbs, many traditional recipes apparently have the ability to bestow long life? Although perhaps this is equally due to living on such a beautiful and fertile island! |
