Lapped by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, this is the second most populous city in South Africa and a highly desired destination. Set on a peninsula at the foot of the striking Table Mountain, this rock formation has become Cape Town's natural icon. The large flattened summit, which you can go up by funicular or on foot, offers impressive views. Being a port city has marked its history: Here, in the 17th century, was the first European settlement on the sub-Saharan African continent.

The colorful houses in the Malay neighborhood of Bo-Kaap are another pole of attraction. At the Greenmarket Square flea market you will find beautiful African craft pieces. Landscape and nature are great assets of the city. The Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden is the largest in the country, with more than 500 hectares, mostly native vegetation. Due to its extraordinary beauty, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To enjoy the ocean waters, go to the long sandy beach in Camp’s Bay.
On the nearby Robben Island you can visit the prison where the leader of the fight against apartheid and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Mandela, was held for decades. |
