Description: Locanda Casanuova

Casanuova is idyllically located amongst olive groves, vineyards and woods. Two long buildings border the interior courtyard which is paved in natural stone; a house chapel reminds the visitor of its monastic past.

During the restoration work they took great care to preserve the simple character of the typical casa colonica. Today Casanuova looks exactly like the estates which for centuries characterized the landscape and shaped its economic structure, starting with its rich colours and continuing with the use of historical roof tiles and patinated terracotta floor tiles.

The kitchen is the heart of Casanuova. They use fresh, seasonal produce, where possible organically grown. The fare consists of breakfast of home-made bread and jams, fresh fruit, muesli and daily surprises, as well as a full evening meal. Snacks and coffee can be ordered as required.

Together with their Italian cooks they use a lot of imagination to prepare the dishes of the season and they don't mind guests watching the chefs at work. The cooks come from the neighbourhood and cook in the same way they cook at home.

Since 1982 they have been running a strictly organic farm. The estate covers ca. 24 hectares: 8ha of forest and 15ha of agriculturally productive land, 3ha of which are used for the cultivation of vines and 5ha for olives. The wine served at Casanuova comes from their own vineyards. It is grown organically and pressed and bottled on the estate.

Despite its quiet location Casanuova lies centrally between important art-historical places of Tuscany: Florence 25 km, Arezzo 40 km, Siena 60 km, and is within easy reach of the A1 motorway. The nearest town is Figline Valdarno, a lively small town with an attractive weekly market and medieval attractions. The well-known Chianti region with places such as Greve, Gaiole and Castellina and its fine wines lies not far from the house.

The house comprises 2 single rooms with a communal bathroom and 18 double rooms with bathroom, and one apartment.

The rooms are tastefully furnished using exclusively natural materials and simple rustic furniture of the region. There is no TV or mini bar, but instead you can enjoy delightful views of the countryside.

Apart from a generously proportioned dining room and a lounge with piano and fireplace there is an inviting library, with its own fireplace. There are other corners for reading, sitting rooms, and a covered outdoor seating area and paved terraces with tables and deck chairs placed conveniently.

Meeting room: a new 80 metre squared room with a wooden floor; suitable for Yoga, Dance, Meditation, Music etc.

Casanuova is a convenient starting point for walks, motorcycle and bicycle rides. Horse riding, swimming and tennis facilities are approximately 5 km. away.

Other destinations in the proximity are: 1. The Road of the Seven Bridges with its Romanesque churches. 2. San Giovanni Valdarno, birthplace of Masaccio, built by Arnolfo 3. Museum of farming culture and Romanesque church in Gaville (3 km.) 4. Vallombrosa with its abbey.

Vine, fruit and olive terraces were restored and are tended lovingly. As well as a vegetable garden, whose produce is used for the communal evening meals, there is a ground-floor Renaissance style garden, and a brand new self-cleansing swimming pond instead of the usual tiled and chlorinated swimming pools.

Locanda Casanuova is open from March to November. Out of season groups can book on a weekly basis (please ask); individual guests can rent accommodation units at reasonable rates.

Booking and cancellation policy

Rates are per person, per night and include breakfast and dinner.
Use of the heatersystem in the apartments will be charged according to the consumption of gas.

All costs, prices, and policies, including exchange rates and package deals, may change and should be confirmed with the hotel upon booking.

Conditions for groups: A deposit of 20% of the full provisional cost is payable by crossed cheque at the time of booking, without which, the booking cannot be guaranteed. The remainder is payable four weeks prior to arrival.
